Pulsed Outperforms DC Electrolysis

Research carried out at Loughborough University and sponsored by SJPI has shown Alkaline Water Electrolysis production performance can be boosted by pulsed power.

The research puts to rest decades long debate on whether pulses can outperform DC conditions, with strong arguments against based on losses scaling with the square of the current. The research compared two conditions where the first behaved as a linear system while the second behaved non-linear. The linear system severely underperformed compared to DC production however, the non-linear system outperformed DC in both efficiency and rate of production for the same power input.

Full average of the results by group showed a 10% improvement in efficiency over DC reaching over 70% efficiency at LHV while also outperforming DC in production rate. Certain conditions achieved over 90% production efficiency with a combined relative 1 sigma uncertainty of 3-6% over the whole group.

Faster production means reduced facility footprint, which saves costs and brings production closer to point of use for the green hydrogen customer.
